Mindfulness in Nature

Summary of Work

Practicing mindfulness has shown to improve people's mental health, wellbeing, and coping skills when presented with stressful situations. The beneficial effects of mindfulness practices are enhanced when done in natural settings. Teaching mindfulness skills is an important intervention that, if scaled, has promise to significantly improve the mental of health of populations.  Organizations such as the Mindful Child Initiative (MCI) teach mindfulness skills to students in schools. In fact, MCI's mindfulness curriculum is provided to every elementary student in the Allentown School District!

I am working with MCI on a few research projects to help them identify the impact of nature-based mindfulness on student outcomes including:

  • A scoping literature review of nature-based mindfulness interventions among children and adolescents in schools

  • An analysis of drawings made by elementary students on how they use mindfulness in their lives

  • A quantitative evaluation of changes in measures of  mindfulness among students
